hi5 Job Opportunities, San Francisco Area
*Software Engineer - Product at hi5.com*
If you are a highly talented software developer who wants to advance your
career within a leading web 2.0 company, we would like to hear from you!
This position is based in San Francisco, CA.
*The Area: Product*
The Product Engineering team is responsible for designing, developing and
maintaining hi5's suite of next generation social applications. Product
Engineers deal both with creating highly usable interfaces as well as
tackling complex problems of scale as we evolve our product. Our Product
Engineers are excellent problem solvers and are passionate about building
great software for an audience of millions of users every day.
*The Role: Software Engineer*
As a Software Engineer at hi5, you will be responsible for the following:
- Coding high-volume software primarily using Java.
- Implementing web interfaces using XHTML, CSS, and Javascript.
*Requirements:*
- B.S. Computer Science (minimum) or related field from a top school
- Knowledge of Java and/or C++
- Knowledge of XHTML, CSS, and Javascript
- Knowledge of relational databases and SQL
- Enthusiasm for solving difficult problems
- Passion for developing great user interfaces
*About hi5:*
Launched in early 2004, hi5 is one of the largest social networks in the
world with over 35 million active members. Each day, millions of people
around the globe repeatedly visit hi5 to stay connected with friends, share
photos of their experiences, and discover the latest news. Today, the
service is offered in nine languages, serves as the #1 site in nearly a
dozen countries, a top 10 site in more than 30 countries across the world,
and the #1 social networking service for the global Spanish-speaking
audience.
hi5 offers an upbeat work atmosphere and the opportunity to influence the
way people connect to the world. You will be working with an exceptional
team and receive a competitive salary with benefits. The company raised
$250,000 from investors in February 2003, reached profitability in late
2004, and raised $20 million from Mohr Davidow in July 2007.
*Product Engineering*
A hi5 Product Engineer's responsibility is to build features for our web
application end to end. They will work both in the presentation layer with
front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX, and on the
server side using Java technology. We use the Struts MVC framework, our own
Services layer, and a persistence layer that uses and extends the iBATIS ORM
framework. Product Engineers will also develop data models and write SQL
queries. So, a Product Engineer will have a chance to greatly impact both
usability and look and feel of our features as well as site performance and
scalability. They will work closely with the hi5 Infrastructure team, which
provides tools, frameworks, and support to the Product Engineering team to
enable them to deliver scalable, high-performing applications. Product
Engineers also work closely with Product Management and UED (User Experience
and Design), and have an opportunity to impact product definition and look
and feel during our development cycles. Our development process is similar
to many Agile methodologies, in that we start with fairly loose product
definitions and refine them as we work through short iterations. That also
means we release often, to our userbase of over 35 million monthly unique
users, so a Product Engineer at hi5 can expect to very quickly see their
work in use across the globe.
*Homepage: *The hi5 Homepage serves as the start page for users coming to
the site. The homepage features Friend Updates, a stream of activity amongst
the user's friends, and additional information to keep them up to date on
what's going on at hi5.
*Profile Page: *The Profile page is a hi5 user's main avenue for
self-expression. It aggregates most of the activity and interests of the
user from our other products. Profile Skins is a sub-project that allows
graphic artists to contribute backgrounds that users can apply. The Profile
page will also host Applications (see Platform).
*Messaging: *Hi5 provides its users with many ways to communicate with their
friends, from the Message Center which provides similar functionality to
traditional email to Status which lets users quickly broadcast what they're
doing to their friends.
*Photos: *One of the most heavily used core applications for hi5 is Photos.
Uploading and tagging friends in photos is one of the most common hi5
activities, and we are constantly working on improving this feature.
*Platform: *Platform is a new initiative under the Product Engineering
umbrella, expected to launch early this year. The hi5 Platform will allow 3
rd party developers to write and run applications within hi5, allowing them
instant access to our userbase. We are currently implementing the OpenSocial
API to deliver our platform, and have already launched several applications
successfully (iLike and Qloud for music).
